I am looking to upgrade from a 9950be to the 960T in this gigabyte MOBO ma790gp-ud4h. I wanted a 1100T but there have been none to find since January. Which do you guys think will be a better upgrade a 965BE or the 960T. I know the 960T is hit or miss with the OC. I like the idea of 6 cores due to my trading platform virtual machine with Etrade and light gaming Star Craft II.

Oh well I bought the 960T from Micro Center for 89.00......I hope it unlocks to 6 cores lol

The 960t is very popular for a reason it oc's well and has a pretty good chance of unlocking. Its a great chip

Thanks I was very fortunate...I just unlocked the cores and now have a 6 core running at 22c with a Xigamtek 1280. I made this build fro trading in 2009, and wanted to upgrade before going to a new mobo. I am not too thrilled with the new AMD Bulldozer, and will wait to see what they have to offer next. I haven't over clocked a cpu in years so now that's next.lol Anyone got a good memory recommend....I think G Skill should do fine I tried them in many of my past builds, and they work fine. My windows experience went from 6.9-7.1- 7.5 every where even with the old 1066 memory. I wonder what the higher frequency memory will do for my rig.lol

Antec 1080sx
Antec 550 psu
AMD 4850's Xfire from 2009 lol
6 gig 1066 Kingston 55515 soon to be 1333 I guess
Giagabyte GA790GP-UD4H
Xigmatek 1280 cooler
Win7 64

Holy crap, 89 bucks?!

I almost want to buy another one just because that's so cheap. Good for you dude, you are going to love it.

Yeah $89.00, and at that price I ran over to get the last one that that store had in stock. Another store had 8 of them but I had to drive 1/2 hour to get at it.lol Even if it didn't unlock I figured WTF it is better than my 9950 with 2 extra cores. Toms hardware showed that unlocked not over clocked it out performed the 965 most every time except 1 test of iTunes streaming due to the lack of multi-core threading needed for streaming music.

Thats a steal for a possible 6 core overclocking chip ! I wish I had a microcenter anywhere near me.

I over clocked to 3.4 Gigs and my windows experience now is at 7.6 from 7.1-6.9...I am not too displeased that I couldn't find an 1100t or a 1090T any more. New egg still selling the 1045T for $145.00 I came out way ahead with this processor.

HTT at 2000
CPU voltage 1.35
1066 G Skill memory 6gigs
Amd 160T Artic silver
Gigabyte MA790GP-UD4H 7fc
Xigmatek 1283 push
Win7 64
Cinebench 5.98cpu Open GL 52.32

This CPU allows me to play StarCraft with no lag in 3v3 or 4v4 games so far. I am thinking to upgrade to 8 gigs of G Skill 1866 memory, and another fan in the pull configuration.

My core temps unlocked are 27c, locked they were 22c over clocked they seem to remain at 27-28c until I play StarCraft II they move up to 42c. I figure a fan configured to pull on the other side of the Xigmatek may bring game temps even cooler. Do you guys think I'll see much speed gains with the 1866 over the 1066 outside of the 2 extra gigs of course.

This is more of a trading platform than gaming, and I know I need at least 8 Gigs to open lots of live trade window charts all at once, and I know in theory the 1866 should improve Speeds over the 1066.

So far I have run this CPU locked for a day, and unlocked for a day, and now over clocked for a day, and my only stress test was SCII for 4 hours nonstop no hiccups! lol

Not sure if the trading software benefits from six cores but your games probably don't. You may want to cut it back to four cores and go for a higher overclock.

Being that the trading software is virtual based I am sure having more than 8 charts streaming live at once should stream better with 6 cores and 8 gigs of ram . I feel I probably can lose the 4850s for better GPU's for gaming if I truly desired that, but that is not a necessary requirement for me at this time. I may try to over clock higher 3.6-3.8 with the extra fan in pull configuration. I am just looking for safe reliable over clocks.

BTW thanks for your gracious input Trent.....I find you to be very knowledgeable in all post that I have read!

I can't post in the for sale, but if anyone is looking for 6 gigs of ram I Have 4gigs of Kingston Hyper X T1's and 2 1gig G Skill 5-5-5-15 in flawless condition listed on Ebay! Let me know if this violates any rules I will take this info down

Yesterday I over clocked to 3.6 with a 1.4 cpu voltage. Cinebench is now 6.36 from 5.98 and Gl speed 53.86 Temps remained 35c. I played a hour of SCII as the only stress test made so far lol...no crashes or hiccups so far.

Today I went back to Micro Center and was hit with a pleasant surprise. I was able to combo the CPU that I bought with a Gigabyte 970A-UD3 mobo for $65.00. Also the Processor price went down $10.00, as well as a rebate for the MOBO of 10.00 I believe. I got 8 gigs of G Skill 1866 CL9 from the Egg for 48.00 shipped.

My new 3.8over clock nets me 6.6 Cine Bench and 58.98 GL with the same old 4850 dual video cards. I think net net a big difference for just a $200.00 upgrade

I had 4 gigs of Kingston Hyper X T1 8500 1066 2x2 gigs sold on Ebay for a mere 40.00 shipped. Now I have a MA790GP-UD4H mobo and a 9950 to try to sell.
I should have just placed it all on EBAY as a good buy for some one. That 1st board has the latest bios and over clocked and unlocked the 960T effortlessly!

Nice! Is that 3.8 @ 1.4v?

Actually it should be 3.8 OC at 1.45V, I also did a 6.73 Cine Bench OC'd at 3.8. I will soon see if I can get Voltage lower than 1.4 same over clock with this new Mobo!

I see Micro Center dropped it $79. To bad there ain't one close to me. The only place that has one is Atlanta/Duluth. They have 1 now but had 2 earlier. The egg is getting a premium price for theirs. To bad egg doesn't drop the price. I'd get one to tinker with.

Today I changed the FSB from 1600 board default to 1866 manual memory speed. I have G-Skill 1866 9 9 9 24 timing installed and decided to see how this worked. Well....my Cine Bench score 6.67-6.73 stays the same but my GL bench went from 57 to 61.91. 1.42 Volt. My unlocked stock Cine Bench is 5.36 on par with 1075t Cine Bench scores.

960t OC 3.85
G-Skill 1866 9 9 9 24
Xigmatek 1283
Gigabyte GA70A-UD3
Antec Earthwatts 500
dual Sapphire 4850s
W.D. 160 caviar blue
Antec 1085sx

Today I turned up the NB, and HTT to 2330 from 2097, and did a Cine Bench 6.81 and GL Bench of 62.09. I hope my notes and progression of what I did may help some one. My question is heat, my NB gets very hot with CPU temps getting as high as 53.

CPU temp of 53 is fine as long as core temps are in that same ballpark or lower. The hot NB is more of a concern. Keep in mind that higher benchmark scores may or may not correspond to real world app performance improvement. Running ram at 1866 on a Thuban core is really pushing it. I'm not sure it will really benefit from the extra bandwidth anyway.

Agreed Trents about the bench marking subject. However I can say that my web pages respond much more faster at the 1866 frequency than it did at 1600.
I suspect that since GL bench went from average 55-58 to 62 that that band width may be the reason for improved video display.

This is definitely not anecdotal either, because I can tell you that the web pages load much faster and surfing has become snappier at 1866mhz. I have read that 1600 mhz was a good speed, but wanted to test the 1866 frequency, and bench possible reactions in Cine Bench.

I notice when I turn the CPU volts back to stock the NB temps drop significantly. I guess pile driver is in the stars for me possibly.
