SUMMARY: Very simple to mount and use.

The good guys at Spire were nice enough to send a sample of their GigaPod III 3.5″ HD Enclosure to try out.

• Aluminum external enclosure for 3.5-inch IDE HDs
• Supports USB 2.0 and 1.1
• Supports up to 400 GB IDE
• Includes external power supply, USB cable, mounting screws, screwdriver and driver disk (if needed)
• Size: 200 x 107 x 30mm

Cooling is passive with vents in the front

There is a power On/Off button, USB and power ports on the back. The PCB slips out of the case for HD mounting.

The HD is held in place by four screws which mount in holes behind the removable black trim strips:

Very simple design and setup.

I mounted a Seagate Barracuda 120 GB 7200 rpm HD to test out the transfer rate with the following results:

Fairly typical results for a USB HD enclosure.

Spire’s GigaPod III SP110-NEB 3.5″ HD Enclosure is very simple to mount and use – a nice package for backup storage. There are other versions available with USB & IEEE1394 ports for higher transfer speeds.
