I wouldn't feel comfortable over 3.0 without a reputable power supply. The life span of the chip is ~10 years. If you overclock it, short of frying it, you'll still more than likely get 5 years out of the thing. In 5 years that processor will be worth it's weight in dirt, so as long as you pay attention to the temps, and start with a mild overclock, ensuring system stability, you have nothing to worry about.
