if u look close you can see where the probes are going in i am sure it is a outer voltmod wiz has not gave us that power yet but i am hopeing i think i will have my s1 by that time so i can push it

I got about 7500 ..

I have the same mobo as you (an AsRock 4core dual sata2). Our pcie slots are 4x. Im running a GeCube x1950pro 512MB card right now and getting a 3DMark06 score at 5500...everything at stock and default. I still reach 5000 with 4xaa/8xaf with temporal and adaptive aa turned on and af set to hq and full trilinear. I have a quad core Q6600 cpu. Is 7500 around what I should expect for 3DMark06 if I get a 3870? Im trying to decide between that and a Geforce 8800GTS 640. Im leaning towards the radeon for image quality (my x1950pro has more vivid colors and higher dynamic range than my old 7950GT and 6600GT but I dont know if thats been sorted out in the newer 8800 cards?) Any recommendations would be appreciated.

No, you would get over 7500 with even a 3850. For a quad I would expect closer to 9k for a single card since a quad improved 3d06 scores significantly. As far as comparing the two cards the geforce will have faster peformance with AA and AINSO at the expense of image quality (no its still not as good as ATi, yes I had an 8800gt, its noticably better on ATi).

Given your last card getting a 3870 or a pair of 3850s would be an excellent upgrade.

time to add my results :D

2x HIS HD3850 IceQ3 Turbo default clocks are 720/1820 (715/909 real).

card #1 = 785/1100 CCC max = 783/1098 real stock | 1.33v modded bios = 837/1172
card #2 = 785/1100 CCC max = 783/1098 real stock | 1.33v modded bios 824/1172

Now with stock bios and 2B pencil mod from 2.258-2.262k ohm resistance to 1.712k ohm resistance = 823/1098 max

2x512MB HIS HD3850CF Stock hsf @823/2196

So close to dual core cpu 20K 3dmark06 :)

Thanks eva2000, been following your progress over at XS...... any idea what the voltages are on those cards after the voltmods?

Nub question time. How much performance (real world preferably) is lost due to the GDDR3 on these compared to the GDDR4 on the 3870s? I'm looking at getting a new card soonish that I can voltmod and watercool and the 3850 512mb seems to be a likely candidate if it is close in performance to the GDDR4 variant.

Thanks.

Probably not a whole lot. The timings should be tighter on the 3850 cards.

I would definitely agree with you here. Its going to be hard for me to buy an nvidia card again until Im sure the image quality gets better, especially on LCD monitors (and I run a dual dvi lcd display.) Ive had the 6600GT for 2 years and then the 7950GT and when I switched to the x1950pro (all dual dvis) the colors are so much better on the radeon (and no, digital vibrance on the geforce wasnt that much of a help since anything beyond one tick oversaturates the reds), and also I felt as though the dynamic range of the colors was more limited with the geforce cards (they both exhibited color banding even with 32bit color depth!). I see none of this in the x1950pro. This is even in 2D, working with photographs and closely examining things like the gradient of a blue sky or the colors on a shirt. The Radeon simply seems to handle colors much better and truer. More vivid but more realistic, too. This is the first radeon card Ive had since the 8500 and I thought that maybe by now the two companies would be closer in image quality, but I guess not. And anyone who thought the quality control would go down since AMD bought ATi were dead wrong. The antialiasing seems to be alot less jagged as well... hey, I had the 7950GT set to 8xS AA and it STILL showed lots of annoying jaggies, and at certain angles, the edges even disappeared! I have the x1950pro set to 4x with temporal and adaptive AA and 8x HQ AF and full trilinear, and the performance hit is only about 10%. im expecting more of the same from the 3870. My only question is which brand? Ive been looking at Sapphire, HIS and GeCube. My x1950Pro 512MB is a GeCube.

This is a GREAT thread, thanks for all the wonderful info!

BTW, my cpu score on 3DMark06 is around 3800 or slightly over, with everything at stock. I dont know if this helps project what the total might be with the 3870, but hopefully it gives some idea. This cpu is really easy to overclock, but I set it back to stock after getting the fsb close to 300 (and cpu score almost 4500)... dont want to risk burning it out lol.

So a maxed out (volt modded water cooled) 3850 would perform nearly the same as a maxed out 3870? I expect there to be some difference, just curious as to how big of one.

It appears the architecture is identical on the two cards minus the GDDR3/4 swap.

The cheapest 512mb 3850 on newegg is currently $189. Cheapest 3870 is $229. That's roughly at 18% difference in price. If I can come within 5-10% of a 3870 with a $40 cheaper card I'm definitely game.

I wouldn't say all that. A 3850 with core voltage bumped up to default 3870 volts still doesn't seem to be getting them as high as an overclocked 3870 on default voltage. The difference may be small depending on the application yet if you're a bencher like me then you'll want the 3870. I haven't seen any tests that determine if the DDR3 on the 3850 can be volted enough to approach the same performance of the 3870 DDR4. My guess is it would be similar but still not as good.

Its pretty much identical to other ATi cards of yesteryear 9800 non pro vs PRO comes to mind so I completely agree.

That being said I have a question, how is it that you are voltmodded and using xfire? Are you using a physical hardmod or a bios mod? I have a similar setup except I have 3850s and am looking to get atleast 800 on the core.

if its cold tonight,i will see how high the core will go.I will try upping the core voltage too 1.4v

Hey guys,
When I try to flash my 3870 BIOS with winflash I get "subsystemIDs mismatch." Am I using the wrong bios or whats the deal? I have a sapphire 3870 and vista 64-bit. Any Ideas?

I got the same error with winflash and my sapphire card. I ended up using a SD card w/ a USB card reader as a DOS bootable disk and flashed it through atiflash. Worked fine that way.
