CES 2020: AMD Announces RX 5600 XT, Zen 2 for Mobile, Threadripper 3990x, and More

With the recent release of Zen 2 for desktop, many users were wondering when we may see them hit the mobile segment which is still based on the Zen+ 12nm architecture. If you haven’t heard yet, the wait is over at CES 2020. Ryzen 4000 mobile has arrived bringing with it some very low TDPs and higher thread counts on the updated Zen 2 platform and 7nm process. On the video card front, AMD officially announced the Radeon RX 5600 XT XT which will slot in between the RX 5700 and recently released RX 5500 XT. Along with the new CPUs and video card, the big gun came out in Threadripper 3990x and its 64 core, 128 thread content creating beast.

Starting with the Renoir based APU’s, AMD’s flagship U-series part, the Ryzen 4800U, brings eight cores and 16 threads with a 15W TDP. This should compete well with Intel offerings. AMD says the 4800H 45W part has the same boost clocks and thread count as 4800U except double the base clock and triple the TDP. AMD and its 2nd generation Zen architecture has turned some heads and will continue to do so in the mobile market in 2020.

Another major announcement this week from AMD is the RX 5600 XT. The new GPU will be out soon (how soon, we cannot share) and is said to compete with Nvidia’s GTX 1660 Ti. The RX 5600 XT is targeted to be the ultimate 1080p gaming GPU and will start at $279.

The Navi 10 based GPU sports 2,304 shaders, 144 TMUs, and 64 ROPS on the backend. Clock speeds will start from 1375 MHz (Game clock) with each of the card partners able to set speeds different. Memory capacity is listed at 6GB of GDDR6 running at 12 Gbps. AMD lists the TDP as 150W (compared to the 1660 Ti at 120W). Keep an eye out for a review on the card!

These out of the way, AMD updated and announced other new products including Ryzen Threadripper 3990x – a 64c/128t monster for the HEDT platform, Radeon Graphics products for laptops including the RX 5600M and RX 5700M along with AMD FreeSync “Premium” said to make it easier for gamers to identify and select displays for the best gaming experience.

AMD President and CEO Dr. Lisa Su delivered the company’s CES press conference, highlighting several exciting new technologies propelling consumers, gamers, and creators to push the envelope in 2020.

• AMD Ryzen 4000 Series and Athlon 3000 Series Mobile Processors – Featuring up to 8 cores and 16 threads, the AMD Ryzen 4000 Series Mobile Processors offer incredible responsiveness, portability, and power efficiency for today’s leading ultrathin and gaming laptops. Athlon 3000 Series Mobile Processors expand the reach of the powerful “Zen” core architecture in mainstream laptops, enabling modern computing experiences. Available from top OEMs, systems powered by these processors will be on shelf for purchase starting this quarter.
• AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X – The definitive solution for content creators, the world’s first 64-core HEDT processor is coming to creators around the world on February 7, 2020.
• AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT XT Graphics Card – Built on AMD RDNA architecture and industry-leading 7nm process technology, the Radeon RX 5600 XT XT harnesses 6GB of GDDR6, PCIe 4.0 and innovative software features to drive 1080p gaming to new heights. The Radeon RX 5600 XT XT will be available from AMD board partners beginning January 21, 2020, for an SEP of $279 USD.
• AMD Radeon Graphics Products for desktops and laptops – Bringing the power of AMD RDNA architecture to OEMs, AMD announced the Radeon RX 5600 XT graphics card for pre-configured desktop PCs. For high-performance 1080p mobile gaming, AMD unveiled the Radeon RX 5600M GPU for laptops. Finally, AMD revealed the Radeon RX 5700M GPU with 8GB of GDDR6 for the most advanced high-performance gaming laptops.
• AMD FreeSync “Premium” – AMD introduced the new AMD FreeSync Premium and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro tiers, making it easier than ever for gamers to identify and select displays delivering the best, high-refresh, ultra-smooth gaming experience. Learn more here.

AMD also detailed AMD SmartShift technology. Harnessing the power of Ryzen processors, Radeon graphics, and the latest Radeon Software, it takes users’ gaming experiences to unprecedented new levels by optimizing performance by automatically shifting power between the Ryzen processor and Radeon graphics as needed.
