So this will be my third iteration of organizing a team for the Novice Nimble, hopefully third time is the charm. We were able to place 3rd in the last novice nimble and can hopefully do better this time. Please check out the below rules page and competition overview to familarize yourself with the competition if you would like to compete. Last competition we set up a google hangouts chat to have better team communication and I will be doing this again once we have a few people interested. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help or to improve how the team is organized

As always, please do not make any submissions until consulting the team so you do not invalidate another team members submission.

Happy benching everyone,

Hey Swart happy to have you back. I know that you signed up to hwbot earlier than me, are you gonna time out of the novice league before this comp is over.

It looks like we can be more competitive this time around in some of the stages as the x99 platform won't play such a big part in this one.

Oh and I disagree on stage 3 being boring, I think it it's a good challenge to get a high reference clock.

Good job lochekey, hope you don't mind my input. If you like add me to your Google chat and I'll help if I'm around and someone's in a pinch

Stage 1: says 3 different CPUs. I would look for 4770 ,4790, 4690. even the "E" variant if you can clock it high enough. Also XP32 will give an advantage and there a re lots of tools in the lounge for this bench.
Stage 2: Pifast runs best in XP again. Fast AMD such as PII/Thuban AthlonX2 and some of the newer FM2+ CPUs would work best
Stage 3: Reference clock. Boring you say? Have you ever tried getting it up over 600? With the right mobo and chip it's quite possible. If anyone has some 775 stuff good p45/x38/x48 chipset . Socket 939 DFI board or other. Good chance at high FSB with these old chips. Then I would go AM2/+. Those will be the highest FSB chips most likely. Most current AMD have an advantage over Intel already here since they start at 200.
Stage 4: Intel setup , as much core speed as possible play with LOD settings and XP might work better. 3D01 shouldn't need more that 2 cores so crank that CPU
Stage 5: similar to stage 4. Core speed with Intel set up. Play with LOD settings in the bench GUI. AMD typically doesn't like them too high. XP32 might be better or even Vista32.
These old 3D benches really rely on CPU speed to drive the score. Use the lounge and the LBB that's what it's there for.

Does the AthlonX2 you mention pertain to my "Athlon 64 4450B+ X2"?

and, I assume I cursed myself and Stage 3 will be my downfall now:eek:

Phew, that's a lot of hardware. Speaking for myself, I don't know what half that shiat is yet!? let alone own it.
I believe that is a common theme among the participants. Not the knowing, but the having?!

For any Skylake subs, should I go with XP32 or Win10.
I am under the impression and advisement that Skylake Win10 subs are allowed,

See when Windows 8 / 10 based operating sysems can be used

but is it comparable/better/worse than XP32 would be?
Should I stick with Win10?

Yeah, my 1st anniversary is fast approaching.
But I didn't drink the punch and put on the t-shirt and tennis shoes until Jun 28th, so I am good for a few more rounds.

@TuKr - No XTU! this round, so you can crawl out of your twitching fetal position and compose yourself.
@OG - Get a new USB drive! I hope you are more responsible with your meds.

Cheers!

That Athlon64 is AM2, AthlonII X2 is AM3 close to the phenom and a good clocker usually. Will depend partly on the motherboard and chip together. single core would likely be easier. What board do you have? When aiming for FSB drop everything else core multi/ht and NB multi as well as ram. Then just keep going up till it won't go any further.
For skylake I would stick to Wi7 maybe 32 bit. If you have it. Try a couple any way. Skylake is a real beatch to get working with XP. Yes it' is legal with win 8/10
Here's a so so sub of mine on a Giga ep45 775 board http://hwbot.org/submission/2810984_johan45_reference_clock_ga_ep45_ud3r_572.01_mhz
Crosshair V Fz http://hwbot.org/submission/2525774_johan45_reference_clock_2x_crosshair_v_formula_z_380.26_mhz

EDIT: just checked you board Swart and those Nvidia chipsets were not so good for FSB

Hey Larry, welcome back good to see you aboard.

Johan, I would be more than happy to add you to the hangout once I get it going. The whole reason I started these threads was to get the "old guard" to help us new guys, incidentally I was hoping to drive some new recruits to join as I see our enrollment of newbies is kinda slim.

Update,

Can everyone who is interested in joining the hangouts pm me contact info so that I can get you added, Swart/Tukr I have your guys info so don't worry about it.

come on man, its the WhiteElephant!! I use CPUCool to crank the FSB.
Have not tried setFSB as my browser won't let me go to the japan site its hosted at. It seems sketchy.
So far have had decent results. Can push it farther with the Sempron LE-1250.
Anyway, I guess we'll find out...

EDIT: This is what I see when I try to get SetFSB:

So I have been fighting with superpi for the past few days and I'm gonna have to move onto something else for a little. I was able to improve my superpi score to 6.922 seconds so not to bad for the effort I put into it.

I'm gonna start working on stage 5 for the time being and try and figure out what drivers will be optimal for the 7970s.

LRG- I assume you are gonna be using your 960 for stage four so I will plan on running the 650ti. If you are not gonna run your 960 let me know and I will run mine.

Happy benching everyone, let me know if I can help.

Well yes and no. I had been to MajorGeeks and a number of other download portal type sites...
They all eventually lead back to Japan!
But!... I did learn something in the process and emailed the guy directly [email protected].
Abo seems to be his name. He called me Eric-san in his email, I thought that was cool.
He sent me a paypal link, I sent him the 800 yen ~$8!!! and an AIDA64 system profile report.
His response was he could not help me and sent me a refund.
I did not ask why. Interesting as CpuCool works?!.......

I have the R7 360 and R9 390x for stage 5...
I was testing out Aquamark on the R7360 and dinking around with it and noticed something odd.
Aquamark says I have an "R9 260x"???
But GPU-Z shows the correct hardware "R7 360 series"
Which is odd as it appears Aquamark uses GPU-Z? I have latest versions!

Anyone? Will this cause problems with subs? Thanks!

Cheers!

Many of the R9 3xx Series video cards use a respin/update on the R9 2xx Series video cards. If you look at HWBot's list of video cards under the Hardware tab. There are no R9 3xx Series video cards listed.

The best driver to use for the 7970 video card, would be the 14.9 or 14.12. AMD has stated that their current driver breaks all compatibility below the 3xx Series :(

Thanks for the info Maddmutt, I tend to stick to older drivers with the 7970s but this will save me some time testing. I have not had a chance to check this as I reinstalled win7 when I got sidetracked playing with 3dmark for the in forum marathon competition. I'm off work this weekend and plan to try and get some work out in on this one. Will update everyone with results.

Larry/Swart, if you have any results from your testing let me know and I will start updating the first post with where we are at for each stage.

I got some preliminary on super_pi (7.407) and 3DMark (78878) on FatherTime (i7-6700k).

I am anxious to get this board off The Bianch and into the case.
Then I can throw the VII hero, i7-4790k on TheBianch. I more than likely will not have the z170 board up in FatherTime for a week or so. SO am trying to leverage the 6700k right now, without a-lot of luck.
I still can't best my bestsuper_pi with my i7-4790!?!? and it seems my i7-4790 score is not that great either?!
Obviously I am missing something here - any crusty-old-timers???

http://hwbot.org/submission/3166925_swarthack_superpi___1m_core_i7_6700k_7sec_407ms
http://hwbot.org/submission/2994155_swarthack_superpi___1m_core_i7_4790k_7sec_348ms

I guess we don't need to worry about bumping anyone else's score. I'll just sub to comp once I max out score or patience...
