Webpage Hit Counter/Countdown

I have a personal webpage that I've been playing around with and experimenting to learn some basic webdesign techniques/tricks. I could really use some help with hit counters and countdowns. If anyone out there would give me:

1) a URL to some code I can copy/paste into my own page or
2) some advice on how to code my own and include into my framework

...I would greatly appreciate it. I know very little HTML, so any advice at all would be awesome.
